Design Story
"Charles Eames felt that it was important to bring value to as many people as
possible," says Jerome Caruso. "I agree with him, and I believe that the
Reaction chair does that."
Caruso and his son Steven are the chair's co-designers.
"Reaction is a low-priced, fully adjustable chair that has all the quality and
function of a Herman Miller product," Caruso explains. "My son and I came up
with a new concept of 'energizing' the chair. Using a composite spring that is
made up of glass and fibers, we were able to achieve a very smooth ride.
Designing all the support elements from plastic and making many of them
multifunctional reduced the cost quite dramatically, and it's an easy chair to
manufacture. But the engineering and design that was required to get there was
quite intense."
The Reaction chair provides high levels of performance and ergonomic comfort at
a great price - up to 25 percent less than competing chairs.
Available with a full complement of adjustments, the Reaction chair also
features a synchronized composite-spring tilt. This unique tilt allows a smooth,
consistent recline. It lets users stop and be properly supported at any point in
the chair's generous recline range. Users can select from up to five recline
ranges at the turn of a dial.
Other controls adjust seat depth, seat height, seat angle, back angle, and arm
height. For user reference, there's a pull-out instruction card on every chair
that explains how to make the adjustments. The Reaction chair is 100 percent
recyclable, meets or exceeds ANSI/BIFMA safety and durability standards, and
meets or exceeds ANSI/HFES standards for healthful use in computer-intensive
work environments.
