Eames Molded Plywood Chairs

Home  :  Classic  :  Herman Miller

The Eames-designed molded plywood chair was a boldly innovative breakthrough when it was introduced in 1946. Herman Miller has been offering it ever since.

Comfortable, practical, and lightweight, it looks as contemporary now as it did then - a modest chair that has come to represent the best of modern design.

The Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair is a bit broader,
wider, and shorter than the Molded Plywood Chair.

Time Magazine Names Eames Molded Plywood Chair the Best Design of the 20th Century

The timeless and elegant molded plywood chair by Charles and Ray Eames has been hailed as the Best Design of the 20th Century by Time magazine.

The outer ply of the chair can be specified in cherry,
walnut, natural ash, red-stained ash, or ebony-stained ash.

The accolade appears in the magazine's final issue of the 20th century. Time praised the Eameses for taking "technology created to meet a wartime need" (for leg splints) and then adapting it "to make something elegant, light and comfortable. Much copied but never bettered."

Herman Miller has been producing the Eames molded plywood chairs since they were first designed in 1946. The magazine termed the S-1 steam locomotive and the Swatch watch as runners-up in the design category.
